EASA Medical Certification

 General information

  • For a CPL or ATPL license, you need a class 1 medical certificate.
  • For a PPL (private pilot licence) you need a class 2 medical certificate .
  • For a LAPL (light aviation pilot licence) you need an LAPL medical certificate .
  • For SPL (sailplane) you need a class 2 or LAPL medical certificate .
  • For a BPL (balloon pilot), you need a class 2 medical certificate  for commercial use or a LAPL for non-commercial use.
  • For ULM (ultra light motor) and paramotors you  need a  class 4 medical certificate .
  • For CC (cabin crew)  you need a Cabin Crew medical certificate .

LOOK AFTER:

If you have a Class 2 medical certificate, it will no  longer be valid as an LAPL medical certificate after the Class 2 validity period expires unless you surrender your PPL license and convert it to an LAPL license.

  • Holders of a PPL licence  (A or H) may apply for a class 2. They can apply for a LAPL certificate if they apply for their PART-FCL LAPL (A or H) immediately after the medical examination at the licensing department. They are not allowed to fly until they have received their PART-FCL LAPL(A or H)
  • Holders of a balloon permit may apply for a class 2. They may apply for a LAPL certificate if you apply for their PART-FCL LAPL(B) immediately after your medical exam at the licensing department. They are not allowed to fly until they have received their PART-FCL LAPL(B).
  • Holders of a balloon permit with commercial authorizations may apply for a Class 2. They may not apply for a LAPL certificate unless they exchange their licence for a PART-FCL LAPL(B) licence and their commercial powers fall.

Note: Commercial authorizations may only be written on a BPL permit and never on an LAPL(B) permit.

If, after obtaining your PPL, you wish to proceed to a higher certificate (CPL or ATPL), I recommend that you immediately apply for a class 1 medical certificate.

You can contact Dr. Ciprian Albu for an initial examination and a Class 2, LAPL, Class 4, and Cabin Crew renewal, and hopefully soon for a Class 1 renewal.

If you have any medical problems such as heart problems (coronary bypass, STENT placement, eye surgery, diabetes, sleep apnea, etc.), please clearly state this during your first telephone contact to make the appointment, because additional tests will be necessary.

The validity of an inspection depends on the age :

Class 2:

<40 years: every 5 years.
40-49 years: every 2 years.
>50 years: every other year.

LAPL:

< 40 years: 5 years.
> 40 years: 2 years.

Class 4:

< 40 years: 5 years.
> 40 years: 2 years.

For an EASA license, you need a class 1 medical certificate for a CPL or ATPL.

Currently, the initial examination and renewal for Class 1 must be done in one of the 3 aeromedical centers.
